The most important commercial area in Spain remains Europe. However, two major trade areas, NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) and emerging Asia, have gained importance in recent years. This dossier analyses the diversification of Spanish trade, both quantitatively and qualitatively, and places particular emphasis on Spain`s relations with Mexico, one of the gateways to NAFTA. The U.S. Department of Commerce (www.trade.gov/export-solutions) Globally, the relative weight of large trading blocs has changed significantly over the past decade. Thus, in 1995, 45% of world trade took place in the European Union, while the volume of trade in the NAFTA countries and emerging Asian countries represented about 17%. Nevertheless, the center of gravity of global trade has changed considerably, with emerging Asia already taking first place in 2012 with 33% of global trade. The U.S. Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) is a trade agreement between these parties. The USMCA replaced the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).
In addition, Spanish exports are more integrated into the “global value chain”, and Spain`s relations with Mexico also play an important role in this area. Let`s look at this step by step. The global value chain was born mainly from the information technology revolution. The production of the iPhone, created and designed in Palo Alto but made in China with components imported from other Asian countries, is a typical example. Spain plays an active and important role in the global value chain. According to estimates by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), Spanish exports and imports used as inputs for the production of goods account for 45% of all Spanish exports. This figure is very similar in the United States, but it is lower in Germany (64%) and France (63%).
